Description

As my previous map didn't get all the little details with it, I decided to make one for every part of the world: here North America, a continent whose importance diminished after the violent breakup of the USA.

A big thanks goes out to :iconsapiento: for his awesome tutorial and to :iconneethis: for recommending it, as well as introducing me to GIMP, with which I made half of this map. I didn't use all the features that I wanted simply because it didn't work out... I still have a long way to go.

Now for the background:

Following Third World War, the US's military was completely broken. Having fought a multifront war in locations as varying as East Asia, the Middle East, Central Asia, northern North America and staving off invasions in its own southern territories, what remained of the US forces were rather demoralized. Its economy was also in ruin and the world consequentially plunged into a global depression never seen before.

Roughly eleven years after the war, separatist sentiments began to stir, and new independentist movements awakened. First off was Canada, who let the provinces of Quebec, Newfoundland and Nunavut go to form independent nations. Soon after, the troubles in Mexico intensified, culminating in a great civil war that included the state, organized criminal groups, separatist guerrillas and anti-government rebels pitted against each other, which lastly resulted in the loss of Yucatan Peninsula to the newly established Republic of Mayaland. Nahuatl was also recognized as a nationwide official language.

Then came the USA. The first to pick up arms were, surprisingly, the oppurtunistic movement for a free Lakota state, which started a campaign of guerilla warfare against the US military in the states of North and South Dakota. Following shortly after was Texas and California, where entire battalions defected to the separatists, thus insuring a swift victory for the two separatist states. The southern rebel movement also intensified when the Confederated States of America was declared and claimed sovereignty over several southern America states, with Nashville, Tennesee as its capital. This was the beginning of a long and bloody war.

Taking advantage of the chaos, several states chose to seced from the two. The most oppurtunistic ones were in the CSA: Louisiana and Florida managed to declare independence while most of the armed forces were engaging Unionist troops, and several Cherokees from Oklahoma and other states emigrated to the Carolinas, where they set up the independent Cherokee Nation, and were later supported by the United States.

In the north, the Lakotans managed to use the chaos to their advantage. Acquiring weapons, they quickly set out to secure key strategic areas, while propagating their cause to the local populace until eventually they had enough popular support to declare the independence of the Republic of Lakotah. Vermont was next, followed by a number of northern Unionist states which seceded and soon joined the Republic of Canada, which had been created following the creation of the European Federation. Later, the Iroquois and Cascadians would also attempt to free themselves, which was met by huge success as the Unionist forces were to weak and thinned out to pose any greater hinder before they could muster up a military defence force capable enough of resisting Unionist invasions.

Next up was the west. Utah seceded and declared itself the Holy State of Deseret, a theocratic goverment following the teachings of Mormonism. While in Arizona and New Mexico, the Navajos banded together with the Hispanics and resisted the Confederate reprisals meant against them, finding valuable allies in Texas and Louisiana, they also took some areas from Mexico. California was set on a war path, exploiting the unstable situation in Mexico to invade the Baja Peninsula. In its weak state, Mexico was forced to cede it to that Navajo.

Hawaii and Puerto Rico also seceded, while Guam united with the Northern Marianas and formed their own country. In the Caribbean, all of the American Virgin islands was taken over by the Dutch-speaking Antillean Confederacy, while Martinique and Aruba declared independence from France and the Netherlands respectively. Bermuda became independent, same for saint Guadelope and Montserrat, who united to form their own country.

That's about all, I think.

I'll gladly answer any questions you've got. ^^
