Cities of Western Europe

Description

Having taken the least amount of damage during WWIII, the countries of Western Europe were the strongest on he continent, even if their militaries had been exhausted as well. Nevertheless, with the war having unified the continent in the struggle against outside enemies and with the threat of yet another more conflicts still feeling very tangible, the European countries were quick to consolidate into the European Confederation following the war. After 11 years of peace, followed by the Great Insurrection or WWIV (actually a large number of simultaneous proxy wars and rebellions instigated by external powers), the countries decided to cede more powers to the supranational government to better overlook things on the continent and the European Federation was born.

Founded in the midst of the Great Insurrection, European military forces were stretched thing across the continent, often fighting deserted forces sympathizing with the rebels. The Federations first course of action was to grant member state status to many of those territories for which the nationalist rebels fought, thus peacefully quelling many of the largest uprisings throughout the country. The remaining rebel forces were put down by the military, now strengthened by the return of the deserted troops, in some places the union fought together with nationalist rebels to subdue another opposing group of nationalist revolters. In Western Europe, this meant that for example France was split up in multiple parts along linguistic lines, giving groups like the Bretons, the Normans and the Occitan-speakers nation-states of their own within the framework of the greater federation.

France, Germany and the Benelux countries, traditionally loyal supporters of the former, older European Union, took these changes with little more than a few riots in major cities. Germany, which was already a federal state from the beginning, was the first to suggest the splitting of the member states into smaller, more nationally oriented and easily manageable constituent countries. The other western countries quickly went along: Germany and Switzerland were butchered altogether, with many of Germany’s former member states either declared constituent countries or unified with each other to greater national entities; Belgium was split in two with half of it forming the new nation of Wallonia and the other half granted to the Netherlands, while Brussels became a city-state; France experienced the worst revolts of any western country, with some being as violent as those in Spain, but those were quickly put down by federal military forces and France resumed being one of the most influential actors in European politics.

The oldest EU members still have considerable political sway in the workings of the federation. The Benelux, the German countries and France are counted among the most powerful industrial and economic powers in the federation, mainly due to them having received the least damage during the Third World War. Occitania, while still recuperating, is one of the largest agricultural producers in the federation and the largest in Western Europe while also being a very popular resort, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors every year from as far away as the Black Sea.

The most popular parties in the West are the European Democrat Party, the European Federal Reform Party and the Rosefront – Social Democrats. Politically, Western Europe has thus become associated with the socio-liberal movement and ideology, as representatives of the western states usually call for legislations along those lines in the parliament.

The region of Western Europe includes the states of: the Republic of Brittany; the Republic of France; the Republic of Normandy; the Republic of Wallonia; the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg; the Kingdom of the United Netherlands; the Republic of Frisia; the Republic of Saarland; the Federal Capital Territory of Strasbourg; the Republic of Mecklenburg; the Republic of Saxony; the Free City of Brussels; the Free Hanseatic City of Hamburg; the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen; the Democratic Republican City of Hanover; the Republic of Hessia; the Republic of Baden; the Kingdom of Bavaria and the Democratic Republic of Swabia. Sometimes, the Shrievatly of Jersey and the Shrievalty of Guernsey are also associated with Western Europe, though they actually belong to the British Isles region.
